Blog 10: Voice of Joy
“Let your joy be in your journey—not in some distant goal.” —Tim Cook
As I was reflecting on my goals for 2019, I started thinking about joy and the role of joy in my life. Are joy and happiness the same or is there a difference? In reflecting, I came across this passage from Psychologies blog:
Joy and happiness are wonderful feelings to experience, but are very different. Joy is more consistent and is cultivated internally. It comes when you make peace with who you are, why you are and how you are, whereas happiness tends to be externally triggered and is based on other people, things, places, thoughts and events.
I wondered about my sense of self and if I am at peace with myself? Do I know who I am and how I exist in this world? As I reflected, I concluded that i do find great joy in life. I enjoy learning more about who I am, the feelings I experience and am always searching for ways to share my joy.
Although my countenance is more stoic and I don’t laugh as much as I could, I am determined to express my laughter more. My husband has such an easy laugh that comes often and is reflected in many moments of the day. I enjoy hearing that laugh even in times of tension, it brings joy and lessens the tension.
In retirement we have found great happiness in our surroundings. We have found many friends with similar values, even if we may have different views on life issues. We live in one of the most beautiful places in the U.S. with the beauty of the lake, hills, and trees surrounding us. I resolve to enjoy life more each day. One of my friends always said “I could work hard, but also play hard.” She always encouraged me to find more time for play. Sometimes we work towards goals that are in the distant and don’t enjoy the journey of each day as Tim Cook expressed well. I am sharing some of my goals with you.
Do you see a difference between joy and happiness? How do you share your voice of joy? Please share your thoughts and ideas.
