Blog 7: Be the Voice that people hear

In our study of over 600 women leaders from around the world, the concept of voice was often expressed. Younger women shared they were sometimes hesitant to speak up at meetings and share their ideas. They also talked about how they might share something and it was not taken seriously, then a male at the table might share the same idea and there was positive response to the idea. Have you had this experience?

Women shared as they were growing in their identity and embracing their voice, they were more powerful and willing to share their ideas. Many women said they wished they had not waited until this later time in their lives. But now in their late 50’s and early 60’s, they were empowered to speak up and share their VOICE. This raises an important point for us as women, how do we encourage younger women to share their VOICE? How do we empower them to speak up?

Can we help women to prioritize their life purpose by taking a stand for what matters most to them and in this way support them in speaking out? Do we model taking a stand and putting cultural pressures aside by living a life based on purpose, and based in love? By taking this type of stand, we can empower the next generations of women.

Speaking in small groups can be an empowering way to hear your VOICE. Backing up your input with support (stories, statistics, impact) will bring ideas to the group and create interest. As you see others listening to your thoughts, start sharing them in larger venues. Be heard and seen. You are making a difference!
